Female inmate in Spokane found hanging, unconscious

SPOKANE — A Spokane County sheriff’s spokesman says a female inmate was found hanging and unconscious in a shower area at the Spokane County Jail.

Deputy Mark Gregory says corrections officers found the woman Tuesday afternoon during a routine housing check. They and emergency medical staffers began CPR until firefighters and an ambulance could take over. The woman was taken to a hospital. Her condition was not available Tuesday evening.

The inmate was not identified.

Gregory says the woman was alone when she was found.

Major crimes detectives are investigating.
