Firefighter’s license suspended over misconduct

LYNDEN — A Seattle firefighter’s emergency medical license has been suspended as he awaits trial for three counts of rape of a child.

The state Department of Health on Friday said Michael James Sulak’s license would be suspended for five years after he admitted to “sexual misconduct” with a 15-year-old Lynden girl.

The Bellingham Herald reports that Sulak, 53, is accused of raping the girl while they were performing at a community-theater musical and in his truck by a fire station in Seattle’s Queen Anne neighborhood.

Charging papers say Sulak confirmed the girl’s account of what happened. The girl told a detective that she ran away from home to be with Sulak. Detectives found text messages between Sulak and the girl in which they talked about being in love. Sulak had been a Seattle firefighter for 15 years.

Earlier this month, Sulak waived his right to a speedy trial in Whatcom County Superior Court. His next criminal court hearing has been set for Oct. 1. He’s out on bail.
