SPOKANE — The Washington State Patrol says a weather system packing hail and heavy rain caused flash flooding that forced the temporary closure of a portion of a central Washington highway.
The state Transportation Department said a six-mile stretch of State Highway 241 north of Sunnyside was closed for more than four hours Friday.
The patrol’s Lt. Terry Liebrecht told the Yakima Herald-Republic that the flooding brought heavy debris onto the road in several places, including a boulder about the size of a car.
The newspaper said a 79-year-old driver lost control of her pickup and went off the road and down an embankment when a sudden downpour hit State Route 24 just east of Yakima. The State Patrol said the driver was taken to a local hospital.
The National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm watch for much of Eastern Washington through Friday evening.
