An ex-military man from Mukilteo is gearing up to take on Democratic U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen.
Republican Dan Matthews, a self-described social and fiscal conservative, will kick off his campaign Wednesday with a caravan through six cities in the 2nd Congressional District.
Matthews is a retired U.S. Air Force pilot who served in the Vietnam War and Desert Storm conflict, according to information provided by his campaign. Today he is an instructor pilot for the Boeing Co. and teaches people how to fly the 747 aircraft.
Appropriately, he will start his campaign with a 7:47 a.m. stop in Mukilteo then travel to Lynnwood, Everett, Mount Vernon, Bellingham and finally Oak Harbor.
His campaign material says Matthews is a contributor to the Nature Conservancy, founding member of the Cousteau Society, lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and signer of the pro-life doctrine known as the Manhattan Declaration.
Matthews is making his second bid for public office. In the 1980s he served as an elected member of the Shoreline School Board. One of the other members at the time was Patty Murray, who is now a U.S. senator.
