Human Rights Awards

Snohomish County Human Rights Commission is accepting nominations for the 2019 Human Rights Awards.

Nominations are for these categories: Human Rights Award, Young People’s Award, Law Award, Diversity Visionary Award, Community Organization Award and Educator’s Award Eligibility.

To be eligible for nomination, applicants must be a Snohomish County resident as of the date of nomination. Nominees must have made a significant contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights in this area between September 2018 and September 2019.

Deadline for nominations is Nov. 5.

Salmon talk

University of Washington professor Jeff Jensen is scheduled to talk from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the UW Bothell Pub Night Talk at Haynes’ Hall at McMenamins Anderson School, 18607 Bothell Way NE.

He’ll explore origins of salmon in the Lake Washington basin, possible restoration of native kokanee and the mystery of the “snerka,” a fish with uncertain genetic affinities. Admission is free.

Snohomish Valley Festival of Pumpkins

Activities at seven family farms in Snohomish Valley — Bailey’s, Bob’s, Carleton’s, Craven’s, Stocker’s, Swan’s Trail and Thomas — include pumpkin patches, corn mazes, hay rides and haunted houses. Through Oct. 31. Check website for times and details.

Owls

Paul Bannick, award-winning author and photographer of “Owl: A Year in the Life of North American Owls” and “The Owl and the Woodpecker,” will offer a free presentation at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Everett Public Library auditorium at 2702 Hoyt Ave.

Bannick’s work can be found in many bird guides and has been featured in The New York Times, Sunset magazine and other publications. His photographs are part of traveling exhibits and are included in a special exhibit in the Chi Mei Museum in Taiwan. Bannick is director of major gifts for Conservation Northwest, an organization dedicated to protecting wild areas and recovering native species from the Pacific Coast to the Canadian Rockies.

Ag and forestry conference

Snohomish County’s 2019 Focus on Farming and Focus on Forestry conference is set for Nov. 7 at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe. The event is in its 15th year.

This year’s Focus on Farming is titled “Nurturing your future” and has seven different tracks. The lunchtime keynote speaker will be Michael R. Rosmann, who will talk about factors that affect a farmers’ behavioral health. Also new this year will be a session hosted by Erin Pirro about managing a business.
