Keep pets cool
Snohomish County Animal Services offers tips to protect pets from the heat.
A hot summer day can turn your car into an oven and pets left in the car can suffer from dehydration, heatstroke, shock, unconsciousness and even death. Avoid taking your dog in the car if at all possible — your dog will be happier at home with access to fresh clean water to drink, ample shade and shelter. Cracking a car window a couple of inches does not allow enough ventilation or air circulation to keep your pets cool inside on hot summer days.
Matthew House seeks donations: Matthew House, a nonprofit that supports the families of those incarcerated, needs donations of clothes and cash.
Matthew House supports families with a clothing closet, food pantry, shelter, transportation to various prisons, child care and adult counseling.
Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 201, Monroe, WA 98272.

Capture yard water: Gardeners can learn how to store and reuse rainwater and how to build a rain garden tonight at the Snohomish Library.
A program is planned at 7 p.m. at 311 Maple Ave.
The class is free and is part of a healthy backyard stream initiative that can help landowners reduce their impact on small streams and creeks. An engineer and a habitat specialist from Snohomish Conservation District will teach the class.
To register, e-mail workshops@snohomishcd.org or call 425-335-5634, ext. 4.
