Front Porch: Asarco topic of meeting tonight

Asarco topic of meeting tonight: Staff members from the state Department of Ecology are scheduled at an Everett City Council meeting tonight to discuss progress on the cleanup of pollution left behind by the Asarco smelter a century ago.

The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Everett City Council Chambers, 3002 Wetmore Ave.

The state is cleaning up soil in yards and parks in north Everett that were contaminated by smoke from the smelter. The picnic and play area at Legion Park is scheduled to be closed for cleanup next winter.

There is no immediate health hazard but long-term ingestion of dust or dirt containing arsenic increases the risk of some types of cancer.

It’s a fish’s life: “The Way of Trout,” a 1969 film providing a close-up view of the life of a trout, is scheduled to be shown April 11 by the Adopt A Stream Foundation.

The free event is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the group’s Northwest Stream Center, 600 128th St. SE, in McCollum Park. Tours of the center’s Trout Stream Exhibit are planned following the showing.

The film, credited with being the first to advocate “catch-and-release” focus, features a fly fisherman and a female trout’s day-to-day fight to survive predators.
