Front Porch: Mukilteo Historical Society meeting

The general meeting of the Mukilteo Historical Society will be held Thursday at 7:15 p.m. in the Fowler Room at the Rosehill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Ave., in old town Mukilteo. The speaker at this month’s meeting is Chad Kaiser, a local Fresnel lens specialist, whose topic will be the “History of Washington Lighthouses.”

The meeting is open to the public and refreshments will be served.

Attention boaters: The Everett Police Department’s Marine Operations Unit is offering a free course this month for anyone planning to operate a boat this summer. State law mandates all vessel operators, 50 years old and under (as of Jan. 1, 2013), have a boater education card.

Officers will teach the course from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 27 at EPD’s South Precinct, 1121 SE Everett Mall Way. The course is state certified and limited to the first 30 participants.

Items are still needed and the last drop-offs will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the high school.

Donations that cannot be accepted are: any item recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, (check www.cpsc.gov for current list); animals; auto parts (including tires); firearms or ammunition; hazardous materials, including gases, oils, paint, paint thinner, flammables and poisonous materials (these can be taken to a county hazardous waste station); large appliances such as dishwashers, washers, dryers, refrigerators and hot water tanks; mattresses and box springs; and baby or child car seats.
