Naval Station drill
Everett residents are reminded that Naval Station Everett is to conduct a security exercise in the harbor around the base today through Thursday. Expect base gate closures on Thursday between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m.
The exercise will include security boat maneuvers, the Navy says, and use of automatic weapon blank rounds. Exercise participants will not be issued live ammunition. There will be a 100-yard safety zone in effect during the exercise. The purpose of the exercise is to maintain and improve the qualifications of emergency personnel who protect the base and its vessels. The exercise also is a test of the base’s ability to work with community partners during a mass-casualty incident. More info:: 425-304-3202.
Everett budget discussion: Everett leaders have scheduled a meeting from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today to hear people’s thoughts on the city budget. The location is Everett Community College’s Wilderness Auditorium in the Jackson Conference Center, 2000 Tower St.
City leaders have had regular discussions about ways to bridge a projected $13 million gap between revenue and expenses in the 2015 budget. Some ideas floated so far include higher business licensing fees and new utility taxes.
There’s also talk of creating a new taxing district to pay for city parks. If people don’t want to increase parks funding, the city could save money by closing popular attractions such as Forest Park’s swim center and petting zoo.
