Front Porch: New Everett School Board member

The Everett School Board was to appoint a new member Thursday night, too late for The Daily Herald’s print-edition deadline. To find out what happened, go to HeraldNet.com.

Five candidates were to be interviewed, with one chosen to replace Jeff Russell, who abruptly resigned Dec. 1 with two years left on his term. On Tuesday, board member Jessica Olson also resigned. Her replacement will be chosen in a similar process later. So Thursday night’s pick was to be made by only the three remaining members of the board.

Party to mark Carl Gipson’s 90th: Former city councilman and longtime Everett resident Carl Gipson will celebrate his 90th birthday Saturday at the senior center that bears his name. Gipson served more than 24 years on the council and was involved in many community organizations.

Gipson and his family moved to Everett in the early 1940s. One of his proudest achievements on the council was bringing Medic One to Everett, said Ron Gipson, Carl’s youngest son and a current city councilman.

In 2009, the senior center’s name was changed to the Carl Gipson Senior Center in honor of his dedication and service to the city.

Community members are invited to celebrate with Gipson and his family on Saturday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Carl Gipson Senior Center, 3025 Lombard in Everett.
