Front Porch: Spring ahead; time to check, change fire alarm batteries

Check smoke alarms

As the time change approaches on Sunday, the state Fire Marshal’s Office reminds people to change the batteries in their smoke alarms.

When you change your clocks, take time to change and test the batteries in your smoke alarms.

Warnings from smoke alarms can provide those critical extra seconds people need to get out of their homes safely. Plan, discuss and practice escape routes with your household members. For more information about fire safety, go to www.wsp.wa.gov/fire/firemars.htm.

Smooch a pooch: A local pet fencing company is setting up a dog kissing booth to benefit the Everett Animal Shelter at the Everett Home and Garden Show this weekend.

Give a donation to benefit stray and unwanted animals, then pucker up for Rocky the border collie or RJ the golden retriever at the Puget Sound Pet Stop booth 294, today through Sunday at Comcast Arena.

They’ll also be handing out free pet rescue stickers for animal owners to let firefighters know they have pets inside their home in an emergency.

Cash donations to the shelter help to provide treatment to sick and injured animals, reduced-cost spay and neuter surgeries for pets in low-income families, funding for community outreach and education programs for responsible pet ownership and other animal welfare services. For more information, call 425-257-6000.

Big band dance: The Moonlight Swing Orchestra Big Band Dance to benefit the Stanwood Area Historical Society is set for 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center, 27130 102nd Ave. NW. Hors d’oeuvres provided.
