BOISE, Idaho — A Boise girl who has battled illness through high school and is four electives shy of graduating is being denied the opportunity to walk across the stage with her Timberline High School classmates at graduation.

KTVB-TV reports Haylee Winters plans to finish her credits over the summer, but school officials won’t make an exception to the policy of not letting anyone short on credits to participate in the graduation ceremony.

Winters recently finished a year of intense chemotherapy for a cancerous brain tumor. Her mother, Jackee Winters, says the treatment shrunk the tumor but also made classwork difficult.

Boise School District spokesman Dan Hollar says the district notified the family in February of a plan to make sure Winters could graduate on time.

Graduation is May 30.
