The first attack ads in the race for governor hit the airwaves today.
The Republican Governors Association launched the initial salvo with a 30-second television commercial blasting Democratic candidate Jay Inslee.
“We don’t expect perfection. But Jay Inslee has made mistake after mistake,” begins the ad airing on stations statewide. It doesn’t mention Republican candidate Rob McKenna.
RGA communications director Mike Schrimpf declined to say how large a buy was made or how long this ad will be running. As of this morning, RGA had put $4 million into a political action committee in Washington for the purpose of aiding McKenna.
Here’s the full text of the ad.
We don’t expect perfection. But Jay Inslee has made mistake after mistake. Local small businesses struggling to stay open…and Inslee votes them a massive tax increase making their survival even more difficult. Skyrocketing federal debt slowing our recovery. And Inslee votes for an $800 billion spending program that never delivered the promised jobs. Jay Inslee, risk our small businesses just can’t afford.
If you watch, you won’t see any citations on screen for the references to the tax increases and spending programs. Schrimpf sent information saying those referred to Inslee’s votes in Congress for the federal health care law and stimulus package respectively.
In a statement, Inslee campaign spokeswoman Jaime Smith said, “this shameless ad is just the start of a multi-million dollar attack based on falsehoods and fabrication.”
