GRAND COULEE — A popular fishing spot below the Grand Coulee Dam has reopened for the first time since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
The Wenatchee World reported that the area on Rufus Woods Lake from Highway 155 to the base of the dam is considered one of the best fishing spots on the upper Columbia River.
It had been closed because of security concerns since Sept. 11, 2001. U.S. Bureau of Reclamation spokeswoman Lynne Brougher said a portion of the area reopened on Tuesday during daylight hours only, and another part of the fishing area is expected to reopen later this year, once more security measures are installed closer to the dam.
Boats are still not allowed past the Highway 155 bridge. The road across the top of the Grand Coulee Dam remains closed to traffic.
