OLYMPIA — Gov. Chris Gregoire will meet with the Legislature’s key budget writers Thursday morning, a move she says is necessary because of a continued impasse in budget meetings between her and legislative leaders.
Gregoire told The Associated Press on Wednesday night that it was clear that Democratic and Republican leaders can’t yet get past a disagreement over a Republican plan to skip about $130 million in pension payments and a Democratic plan to delay a $330 million payment to school districts by one day.
Up until now, only legislative leaders were meeting with the governor. Gregoire said she wants to talk with the budget writers now about how to make progress on getting a supplemental budget passed.
Lawmakers are looking to close a budget gap of about $500 million through the end of the two-year budget cycle ending June 2013.
