EVERETT — Detectives are investigating an in-custody death that occurred in the 13300 block of Highway 99 Thursday night.
The incident began with a 911 around 8:30 p.m. The caller reported that a 40-year-old man had assaulted his father at their residence, said Kristin Banfield, a spokeswoman for the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team, a cadre of detectives from various county law enforcement agencies who investigate police use of force and in-custody deaths.
Two deputies with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene a few minutes later and encountered the man in the driveway of the home. They placed him in handcuffs and requested medical aid a minute later, Banfield said. Medics were on the scene and immediately began CPR. The man was pronounced dead around 9:25 p.m.
Both deputies were hired by the sheriff’s office a little over a year ago and will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure under such circumstances.
When the SMART investigation is complete, results will be forwarded to the Snohomish County prosecuting attorney, who will determine if use of force was justified, Banfield said.
