Arlington Mayor Barbara Tolbert recently honored Hands Together with the Mayor’s Volunteer Award. Hands Together operates the city’s only cold weather shelter for homeless individuals.
“Thousands of hours were spent by volunteers to ensure no one has to be unsheltered when temperatures drop below freezing. Each one is a true blessing to our community,” Tolbert said.
The shelter was open more than 50 nights during the winter of 2016-17, serving from six to eight people each night. That’s up from last year’s average of three people sheltered on subfreezing nights.
The group’s 100 volunteers come from several area churches, including Arlington United Church, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Smokey Point Community Church, Jake’s House Church, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on 172nd, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Arlington Free Methodist Church, Sisco Heights Community Church, Falcon Ridge Community Church, Atonement Free Lutheran Church and Lifechurch 360.
