SPOKANE, Wash. — One wolf has been killed by a hunter hired by the state, and up to three more may be killed to protect sheep in southern Stevens County.

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife says a hunter on Saturday killed one member of the Huckleberry Pack of wolves. Hunters of Monday resumed their efforts to find and kill up to three more members of the pack, which is estimated to have 12 members.

Since Aug. 14, the agency has confirmed that wolves from the Huckleberry Pack have killed 22 sheep and injured three more in six separate incidents, despite an array of preventive measures employed by the department and the sheep owner.

Environmental groups are opposed to the hunt.

The Huckleberry Pack is one of 13 in the state.
