FERNDALE — Whatcom County officials say I-5 was shut down for two hours on Saturday night after reports that someone with a rifle was firing shots from an overpass in Ferndale.
Sgt. Kevin Mede told KING-TV that a Ferndale police officer saw shots being fired over the northbound lanes.
Officers from Whatcom County, Ferndale and Bellingham police departments, as well as the Washington State Patrol and the Border Patrol all responded to search for the shooter, but he was able to get away.
I-5 was reopened around 12:15 a.m. but the investigation continues.
