FILER, Idaho — A south-central Idaho police officer who shot a resident’s dog has been placed on administrative leave.
Filer Mayor Rick Dunn told The Times-News in a story Wednesday that Officer Tarek Hassani was placed on leave following the shooting on Saturday.
A video recording from Hassani’s dashboard-mounted camera shows Hassani kicking the barking black Labrador named Hooch before shooting it.
Deputy City Clerk Debbie McMahan said she’s received about 60 calls from concerned residents.
But some residents defend the officer, saying the small town has a big problem with dogs running lose because residents ignore leash laws.
Resident Betty Mingo said some students carry sticks to protect themselves from roaming dogs.
Hooch’s owner, Rick Chubb, said Hooch is usually in the back yard but he got out when guests arrived.
