Sailors attend USS Enterprise ceremony

Three sailors from Island and Snohomish counties were among thousands of people who attended the recent ceremony marking the end of service for the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise.

The warship, the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, recently completed its 25th and final deployment and returned to its homeport of Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia for its scheduled decommissioning. More than 100,000 sailors and Marines served aboard the Enterprise during its lifetime, which included every major conflict since the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Recently serving aboard were Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Anthony J. Kubin, Lt. Cmdr. Ken B. Sanchez and Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Melinda J. Ambers. Kubin is the son of Judith Johnson of Marysville and Joseph Kubin of Everett. He is a 2007 graduate of Cascade High School of Everett. Kubin joined the Navy in April 2008. Sanchez, a 1981 graduate of Oak Harbor High School, joined the Navy in January 1984. Ambers, daughter of Beverly Watkins of Oak Harbor, joined the Navy in July 1997.
