Inmate hangs self in Benton Co. Jail

KENNEWICK — The Benton County sheriff’s office says a suicidal inmate hanged himself in the jail at Kennewick in 20 minutes between safety checks on his cell.

The sheriff’s office said Christopher M. Britton, 29, of Richland could not be revived.

The Tri-City Herald reported that he said he was suicidal when he was jailed Saturday on outstanding arrest warrants. He was placed in a safety room and was alive at a safety check at 7:08 p.m. Monday but hanging 20 minutes later.

KNDU reported that he tore a piece off a blanket to use as a noose.
