EVERETT — A man died and a woman was arrested Thursday night when a Jeep crashed into a house.
The victim, believed to be in his 50s, apparently was struck while preparing his car for snowfall. He was given CPR but died at the scene.
The suspect, 30, said she had been on her phone at the time and that is what caused the wreck, police wrote.
Detectives are looking at other factors.
Police believe she was under the influence of alcohol and perhaps drugs.
Officers reported smelling alcohol when they approached her at the crash scene. A breath test reading later was .062, which slightly under the legal limit for driving after alcohol consumption, police said.
The woman also allegedly admitted smoking methamphetamine earlier in the day. An open bottle of alcohol reportedly was found on the front passenger side of the Jeep.
The crash was reported around 9 p.m. in the 3800 block of Grand Avenue.
The Everett woman said she was driving north on Grand Avenue when she “sideswiped a couple of cars” and hit a house, police wrote. The Jeep was found in a front lawn.
She told police she had no idea that the Jeep also had hit a man.
The driver remained at the scene and was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of vehicular homicide and driving with a suspended license.
Police received a court-approved warrant to have the suspect’s blood drawn at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. An emergency room doctor cleared the woman to be booked into jail.
Details about the man who died, including his identity, were pending investigation by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.
