CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. — Authorities said a Chicago-bound flight made an unscheduled stop in Buffalo after a water pump caught fire in a lavatory.

United Airlines Flight 769 had taken off from nearby Rochester shortly before the incident at about 8 a.m. today.

A Buffalo Niagara International Airport spokesman said a flight attendant quickly extinguished the small fire. But with smoke in the cabin, the pilots decided to land the A-319 Airbus.

None of the 127 people on board was injured. Passengers were put on another plane and continued on to Chicago.
