Lynnwood gambling rules stay; mayor’s veto stands

LYNNWOOD — The city’s gambling prohibition will stand for now.

The Lynnwood City Council’s efforts to override a mayoral veto and rewrite the city’s gambling rules fell short on votes Monday night, according to Mayor Don Gough.

In September, City Council members sought to loosen the city’s gambling rules to allow for some “amusement game”-type gambling in city limits. The new ordinance was designed with the city’s Chuck E. Cheese location in mind and sought to clear up questions about the legality of for-profit games that reward kids with prizes.

Nearly all forms of gambling are banned in Lynnwood, except for small charity-type stuff and certain kinds mandated allowed under state law, like pull tabs.

Mayor Don Gough vetoed the measure, because he felt the public needed more opportunities to weigh in, he said.

It’s not yet clear if council members will seek to resurrect the idea in another form.
