Lynnwood man gets 45 years for fatal Seattle shooting

SEATTLE — A Lynnwood man who fatally shot another man in downtown Seattle three years ago has been sentenced to 45 years in prison.

The Seattle Times reported that Tomas Afeworki, 30, who represented himself at trial, was so disruptive during Friday’s hearing that King County Superior Court Judge Laura Middaugh eventually ordered him removed from the courtroom.

Michael Yohannes was shot in the back of the head on Oct. 26, 2010. No motive was ever given by prosecutors. Afeworki was arrested a short time later inside the bathroom of a nearby restaurant.

The victim’s brother, Sampson Yohannes, asked the judge to lock up Afeworki for as long as possible.

The defendant said repeatedly in court that he plans to appeal his conviction.
