LYNNWOOD — An Everett man high on meth was arrested Sunday night for investigation of assault after allegedly crashing a stolen car into a Lynnwood motorcycle officer.
The officer, a 12-year-veteran of the Lynnwood Police Department, suffered a knee injury and was transported to Swedish/Edmonds hospital for evaluation. He was given a knee brace and crutches.
“Thankfully he didn’t sustain life-threatening injuries,” Lynnwood police spokeswoman Shannon Sessions said.
Officers were called to Alderwood mall in the 3000 block of 184th Street SW around 7:15 p.m. after security there alerted police of a man in their food court who looked similar to a suspect wanted on a warrant.
When the motorcycle officer arrived at the mall, he spotted the suspect behind the wheel of a Dodge Challenger in the parking lot.
The officer stopped his motorcycle directly in front of the car, drew his weapon and ordered the suspect to show his hands, court records said.
The man turned on the ignition, revved the engine and accelerated, hitting the officer and knocking over the motorcycle, Sessions said.
As he drove away, he passed a police car and went over a curb, through landscaping and across a sidewalk before crashing into two parked vehicles.
That collision overturned a Mini Cooper, causing it to roll onto its passenger side with the front end of the Challenger on top of it. The Challenger then hit a second parked vehicle occupied by a Snohomish woman, 25.
“The woman was obviously shaken, but didn’t have any serious injuries,” Sessions said.
She was treated by medics and released at the scene.
The suspect, 19, was taken into custody. An Everett District Court judge on Monday set bail at $100,000. Police also determined that the Challenger was stolen from someone in Everett.
The man allegedly told police that he panicked and that he didn’t mean to hit the officer with the car, court papers said. He also said he used methamphetamine about two hours before the incident.
Police had been looking for him since Feb. 19, when he allegedly crashed a different stolen car near the mall. On that day, he was spotted in a stolen Jeep. He failed to stop for police and crashed a short distance away but escaped, court papers said.
“With evidence recovered from the stolen vehicle, we were able to identify the suspect and were familiar with him from past arrests,” Sessions said.
The man was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of assault, eluding, three counts of possessing a stolen vehicle and malicious mischief.
