MILL CREEK — Police officers in Mill Creek may have looked a little different these past few weeks.
At least eight people in town, including six police officers, have been participating in “Movember,” a fundraiser where men grow mustaches to get people talking about men’s cancers and men’s health.
“A lot of the guys do just big burly trucker ‘staches, just as fun and as ridiculous as possible,” said Mill Creek officer Jesse Mack.
The Mill Creek team, nicknamed “Mocreek,” has raised more than $700 so far, Mack said.
Police officers’ personal appearances while they’re on duty are strictly regulated by department policies. Police Chief Bob Crannell agreed to waive the mustache rules for Movember, Mack said.
People in the community haven’t seemed to notice the longer mustaches, he said.
Movember is meant to remind people to stay healthy and to support those who are living with cancer, Mack said. Proceeds from the fundraiser go toward research for testicular and prostate cancers, for example. Some people participate to honor loved ones lost.
The officers participating in Mill Creek last shaved their mustaches on Oct. 31, Mack said. Trimming was discouraged.
“It’s just supposed to turn into whatever glorious mustache you can grow,” he said.
