MILL CREEK — The city of Mill Creek is looking for help naming its future park.

The new city park is planned at 132nd Street SE at 44th Street in the East Gateway Urban Village.

“It’s going to improve the look of that whole area,” City Councilman Mike Todd said last month.

The coming village is a 52-acre development that is expected to include 302 housing units and 2 acres of commercial property.

Community Development Director Tom Rogers said the city negotiated to include a 1.26-acre park. The city involved people who live in the area in the initial planning process, he said.

“It was clear that the community really wanted those public amenities,” Rogers said. “It could have just been a big strip center.”

Polygon Northwest Co. plans to build the park and housing units. The Bellevue home builder also is marketing the commercial property. It has agreed to pay for the park’s construction, Rogers said. The city expects to cover the park’s maintenance costs.

“It’s a great public-private venture,” City Manager Ken Armstrong said.

Park plans include a play structure, ball courts and restrooms. Plans have features such as a swing and merry-go-round that are accessible to people in wheelchairs.

Construction is expected to begin this spring.

In the meantime, Mill Creek’s Parks and Recreation Board is accepting suggestions for the park’s name. The board expects by early February to recommend the name to the City Council.

The park is expected to open this summer.

“It’s one of those feel good things,” Rogers said.
