Motorcycle deputy hit by wrong-way driver in Everett

EVERETT — A Snohomish County sheriff’s motorcycle deputy was hospitalized Thursday morning after being struck by a wrong-way driver along Evergreen Way in south Everett.

The collision and ensuing police investigation closed northbound Evergreen Way at 112th Street SW for hours on Thursday.

The deputy, 48, is expected to survive, officials said. The driver of the other car, a white Lexus ES 300, also was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

The crash happened about 10:30 a.m., just north of 112th Street SW, Everett police spokesman Aaron Snell said. Investigators believe the Lexus, driven by an Everett man, 33, was southbound in the northbound lane when it struck the motorcycle.

The motorcycle appeared to have been dragged in the collision. Other property nearby also was damaged.

The deputy is a 10-year veteran of the force, Snell said.

The northbound lanes of the road were reopened about 1:15 p.m.

A large number of police and fire crews converged on scene.

Everett police are investigating the collision, Snell said. The sheriff’s collision detectives also could be seen at the crash site.

There was no immediate update on the deputy’s condition, Snell said. Detectives did not release his name or other details Thursday.

The crash comes a week after a funeral in Everett for Washington State Patrol trooper Sean O’Connell. The motorcycle trooper was killed in a traffic accident in Skagit County on May 31.

In addition, at least three civilian motorcycle riders have died in crashes in Snohomish County since late May. Those crashes happened in Everett, Mill Creek and Silvana.
