MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — A swimmer who drowned at Lake Ballinger has been identified as a Mountlake Terrace man.
Ismael Mazariegos Barreda, 32, swam out to an island in the lake around 7 p.m. Sunday, according to police. His family lost sight of him and called 911.
A dive team searched for him for hours. Authorities recovered Mazariegos Barreda’s body Monday morning. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed on Tuesday that he died of drowning.
It was the second death in south Snohomish County lakes over a hot, sunny weekend.
Brian Speakes, 71, was pulled from Crystal Lake northeast of Woodinville on Saturday afternoon. He could not be revived. The cause and manner of his death remained under investigation.
Another five incidents — near-drownings and other rescues — were reported at Eagle Falls.
This story has been modified to correct the age for Mazariegos Barreda.
