The National Merit Scholarship Corporation on Sept. 13 announced the names of about 16,000 semifinalists nationwide in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The high school seniors will now be considered for finalist status and, ultimately, National Merit scholarships.
Semifinalists posted the highest scores on the Preliminary SAT, taken as juniors — representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors.
