EVERETT — Sailors probably won’t be playing softball anymore on base at Naval Station Everett.
On its former softball diamond, the Navy is finishing up a new track and field where sailors will perform their regular physical fitness assessments.
The construction activity has drawn the curious, who watch from above at Grand Avenue Park.
The track and field are located next to the Navy’s main gate off W. Marine View Drive.
The multi-purpose field, covered with artificial turf, will be striped for soccer and flag football, and equipped with lights and a scoreboard. The 400-meter track has six running lanes surrounding the field, base spokeswoman Kristin Ching said.
“The softball field was seldom used,” Ching said. “A place was needed for the outdoor fitness area.”
Construction on the track and field began May 20 and should be completed this fall, she said.
Previously, with no track on base, sailors were required to run their fitness tests using a course on the sidewalks of the naval station. With all the traffic there, it just wasn’t safe, Ching said.
“The new multi-purpose field will be much more convenient for sailors,” she said.
The $1.97 million construction contract was awarded to National Native American Construction.
