New corrections chief at Snohomish County jail

EVERETT — Newly appointed Snohomish County Sheriff Ty Trenary on Thursday announced a change in leadership at the Snohomish County Jail.

Jeff Miller, a 30-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, will serve as corrections bureau chief, according to a sheriff’s news release. Miller will oversee the booking, custody and release of inmates, in addition to jail administration and medical services.

National corrections experts are set to visit the jail later this year and assess operations. The review was requested in March in part because of a series of inmate deaths in recent years, some of which involve pending legal claims alleging inadequate medical services.

The former corrections chief, Mark Baird, will be reassigned within the bureau.

The jail’s average daily inmate population is about 1,200. Staffing there accounts for roughly half of all the sheriff’s employees.
