OLYMPIA — The Department of Transportation has installed two gates on the North Cascades Highway.
The department already has gates just east of Diablo and about 14 miles east of Rainy Pass to close about 37 miles of Highway 20 when snow buries the road. But the rest of the year, the winter gates block off many campgrounds and trailheads if the highway needs to be closed for mud or rock slides or forest fires.
The new gates will close just 11 miles of the highway and will allow access to Rainy Pass at the Cascade crest from the east side.
