NJ man accused of shooting protected hawks

NEWARK, N.J. — A New Jersey man charged with repeatedly shooting protected hawks from his back door will be freed on bail.

Robert Losasso is being released on $10,000 bail.

He was charged Friday with six counts of violating the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. He’s accused of killing or attempting to kill red-tailed hawks, sharp-shinned hawks, red-shouldered hawks and Cooper’s hawks.

Losasso did not enter a plea. He has denied shooting the birds to law enforcement.

The federal public defender assigned to represent him refused to comment.

Losasso’s neighbors in Somers Point, N.J., had seen at least 40 dead or injured birds in the area over the past several years.

Authorities say a surveillance camera set up nearby showed Losasso pointing a gun out a door.
