Odd behavior prompts school lockdown in Lakewood

LAKEWOOD — No students were in immediate danger during an extended lockdown Monday morning at the Lakewood School District.

About 9:30 a.m., a man was on school grounds “acting strangely,” Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Shari Ireton said.

Parents became concerned and called 911.

Deputies spoke with the man, 33, who had no apparent ties to the schools. The man was referred to a mental health services provider, Ireton said.

“There was never any concerns about anyone having a gun on school grounds,” she said.

A police dog searched all of the schools and found nothing amiss.

The man was first spotted at Lakewood Elementary School, but the district implemented a full lockdown of surrounding campuses as a safety precaution, said Joyce Scott, director of human resources and learning support services.

District officials planned to debrief with the sheriff’s office about the incident, she said.
