ONALASKA — The brother of a man shot outside a house at Onalaska says he was not an intruder but had spoken with the homeowner about buying a truck or auto parts.

John McKenzie told The Centralia Chronicle his brother Thomas McKenzie was not a burglar and was with his wife when he was killed in the driveway.

The 56-year-old Morton man died Monday night at the scene.

The Lewis County sheriff’s office originally reported the shooting as an interrupted burglary and now says the case remains under investigation to determine if it was justified.

The home is under construction. The owner remained at the house Monday night because of an earlier burglary. He told deputies he heard noise, opened the garage door, saw a flashlight and fired.
