Out-of-control weed burn destroys Sunnyside home

SUNNYSIDE — A man burning leaves in his front yard lost control of the flames and destroyed his $440,000 home on Saturday.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reported that the man was conducting some weed control on his property by burning leaves in his front yard.

Fire District 5 Capt. Mark Oakes says after the man lost control of the burn several arborvitae ignited near the house. There were no injuries but Oakes says the home is a total loss.

It took more than 25 firefighters from several agencies three hours to bring the blaze under control.
