Pierce County deputy wounded, man dead in standoff

SPANAWAY — A Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman says a man is dead and a sheriff’s deputy has been wounded after shots were fired at a commercial storage unit in Spanaway. Deputies responded to the site after reports that a man was making threats.

The News Tribune reported that spokesman Ed Troyer said Tuesday evening that the 27-year-old suspect was dead. It was not immediately clear how the man died.

Troyer said people at the storage site called for help Tuesday afternoon, saying the heavily armed man thought the world was ending and they felt he was a danger to himself and others.

The spokesman said deputies returned fire after the man shot at them, wounding one deputy in the arm. The unidentified deputy was taken to a hospital. Troyer said the injury did not appear life-threatening.
