VANCOUVER, Wash. — Vancouver police and federal authorities are investigating a Tuesday morning car explosion in Vancouver that left one man dead.
Agents with the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco and Explosives are investigating the explosion site near Orchards Park.
A man who lives in the neighborhood told The Columbian newspaper that he was pulling out of his driveway at 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday when he heard the explosion.
“I probably backed up a couple feet when I heard the explosion,” said Darek Whiteaker, who called 911, shined his headlights on the car and told dispatchers what he saw.
Every window of the car was blown out, the roof of the vehicle was puffed up and there was glass and foam in the street, he told The Columbian.
Whiteaker said he didn’t see anyone around the vehicle when it exploded.
To be safe, he kept his distance and, after police arrived, he went to work.
“I was afraid it might blow up again . I didn’t want to risk my life,” he said. “I waited to see if there was any movement in the car and there wasn’t.”
Police have not released any information about the man’s identity or any more details about how the explosion happened.
