Police converge on Monroe house after reported gunfire

MONROE — Police in Monroe surrounded a house Sunday night after a reported exchange of gunfire.

Officers were trying to make contact with people inside a home in the Fryelands neighborhood around 9 p.m.

By 10 p.m., they determined no one was there.

Officers remained on the scene pending a search warrant.

“We do believe there are weapons inside the home,” Monroe police spokeswoman Debbie Willis said. “We have attempted to make contact but so far they are not responding.”

Police received a report around 5:40 p.m. about a possible exchange of gunfire between a passing car and people inside the home in the 154th Street block of Esther Avenue, Willis said.

“We are still trying to sort it all out,” she said.

There were no reported injuries.

Willis said she had no idea how many suspects might have been involved or about a motive.

Off-duty police officers were called in to help with containment.
