Police: Father not a suspect in toddler’s death

PORTLAND, Ore. — Police in Cannon Beach, Oregon, say a 13-year-old girl found seriously injured in a room at a coastal resort will survive.

At a news conference Saturday, Chief Jason Schermerhorn said the girl is recovering after surgery at a children’s hospital in Portland and her condition is stable.

The girl was found cut Friday morning in the same room where her 2-year-old sister was found dead. The chief said the toddler was not cut and he’s awaiting autopsy results.

No suspects have been named, but investigators are looking for the mother of the children — Jessica Smith, 40, of Goldendale, Washington.

The chief says the father has cooperated with detectives and been ruled out as a suspect.

Multiple media reports said the couple had recently separated.
