Prescription drug slip disqualifies state patrol recruits

SEATTLE — A number of otherwise qualified Washington State Patrol recruits have missed out becoming state troopers because they took someone else’s prescription drugs at some time in their life.

Patrol spokesman Bob Caulkins says borrowing a drug from a friend is a felony, even if a doctor probably would have prescribed the same drug for an illness or injury. He says many applicants don’t realize that when they are questioned about drug use and given a lie detector test during the application process.

Caulkins told KIRO-FM that doing it once in their lives is enough for disqualification.

The Washington State Patrol has more than 60 vacancies. The agency is adding recruiters to help find people who may qualify for the job.
