Rabbit hunter accused in Oregon shooting death

BEND, Ore. — An Oregon man was jailed for investigation of murder and manslaughter after shooting his friend’s brother in the face during a rabbit-hunting trip, authorities said.

The shooting occurred Sunday afternoon near the Crooked River National Grassland south of Madras.

Suspect Montana Silk Marlett, 24, of Madras fled after the shooting, Jefferson County Sheriff Jim Adkins said, and deputies tracked him down at Boyce Corral, a nearby site for riding horses and holding dog trials.

The victim, 19-year-old Devon Moschetti, had planned to go hunting with two friends. Before heading to the area, they met Marlett and invited him to go along.

“For unknown reasons, Montana Marlett intentionally pointed a shotgun at Devon Moschetti and shot him,” Adkins said in a statement late Sunday.

Moschetti died at the scene east of Highway 97.

Marlett did not have a weapon when deputies found him. A pistol and shotgun were recovered at the scene of the shooting, Adkins said.

Six to 10 members of the victim’s family went to the scene after hearing about the shooting. Detectives in Bend and Deschutes counties were called to help interview witnesses at the Madras Police Department.

“When I got on scene, it was nothing but chaos here, because of the family and friends that were at the scene of the shooting,” Adkins told KTVZ (http://is.gd/H3fRvo ). “Of course, I grew up here, and I know the family, so they’re all letting their feelings out.”

Marlett was booked into the Jefferson County Jail. It’s unknown if he has an attorney.
