Radar-triggered camera coming to I-5 in Wash.

CENTRALIA — The state Transportation Department says a radar-triggered camera will start snapping photos of speeders next Monday in an I-5 construction zone in Lewis County.

Agency spokeswoman Alice Fiman says the automated camera is being used in an effort to slow drivers and improve safety.

Travelers will see signs that warn “Speed limit photo enforced.” A small SUV parked near the highway will monitor speeds in both directions. The camera will photograph the rear license plates of speeders. Offending drivers could find a $137 citation in the mail.

The Transportation Department says the cameras were used in two work zones on I-5 south of Olympia in 2008 and 2009. Most recently, the cameras were used on I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass.
