SULTAN — Detectives are investigating a report of a rape involving two students on the campus of Sultan Middle School.
The sexual assault was reported to have occurred around 1 p.m. March 13, during school hours and on campus, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. The case was still under investigation a week later, and the accused student had not been arrested as of Monday. There doesn’t appear to be any threat to the school at large, according to the sheriff’s office.
In a statement posted Sunday on Facebook, Superintendent Dan Chaplik and Principal Nathan Plummer wrote staff had been alerted on the day of the incident. They said no further details would be released.
“We can, however, clearly state that no current or former staff nor any other adults were in any way involved in this incident, which has been questioned/alleged on Facebook,” the statement said. “Due to the sensitive nature of this event, we are requesting that any further speculation cease, in order to protect the young people involved.”
Chaplik declined to say if the accused student was suspended or expelled. He said the school district investigation was ongoing.
The district asked anyone with information about the case to contact the sheriff’s office at 425-388-3393.
