LYNNWOOD — Homes across Western Washington may become safer with the installation of smoke alarms this weekend.
The American Red Cross is deploying thousands of volunteers and partners across the country to install 100,000 smoke alarms for free. The goal is to improve the safety of communities at high risk for fires.
The Alpine Ridge and Westberg mobile home parks in Lynnwood and Plantation Mobile Home Park in Snohomish are among the communities to get the free alarms Saturday.
“Three out of every fire home fire deaths in this country happen in homes that don’t have working smoke alarms,” said Alex Dieffenbach, The American Red Cross Northwest Region CEO.
On April 19, an 88-year-old man died after his mobile home in Marysville caught fire. Several apartment complexes in Everett were found to need fire alarms in 2016 after a fatal fire on New Year’s Eve.
A similar campaign in 2016 installed about 900 alarms to 450 homes, most of which were mobile homes in Everett, Lynnwood, Marysville and Sultan.
