OLYMPIA — The Romanian government is seeking to extradite a Yelm couple on tax evasion charges.
The Olympian reported Thursday that Radu Nemes and his wife, Diana, are accused of selling about 999,000 tons of diesel fuel between May 2011 and July 2012 that they avoided paying about $72 million in taxes by falsely documenting it as lesser-grade fuel.
According to court papers filed in the U.S. District Court in Tacoma, the couple has been criminally charged with tax evasion in Romania. Federal agents served search warrants at their Yelm home and another property they owned and found an underground bunker and seized nine firearms. They were arrested March 18 and are being held in federal detention. Their extradition hearing starts May 22.
