Teacher recognized for service
Carol Johanson retired Dec. 8 after 30 years in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. For 26 of those years, she also worked as a full-time classroom teacher.
At a retirement ceremony at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, the Cedar Wood Elementary School fifth-grade teacher was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. She also received a letter of appreciation from President Barack Obama.
“Ms. Johanson is an example to our school and community — balancing her responsibilities as teacher, soldier, parent and neighborhood volunteer,” Principal David Jones said. “In each different role she serves our community and nation in a unique and effective manner. We are proud of her and appreciative of her three decades of service.”
Cedar Wood Elementary School is in Bothell, and is part of the Everett School District.
Flood-damaged school gets relief
The Edmonds Public Schools and Alumni Foundation issued a school-wide grant to Oak Heights Elementary School for up to $700. The money will be used to purchase supplies for classrooms that were damaged as a result of flooding last month.
The foundation serves students and families in the Edmonds School District through classroom and school-wide grants, student scholarships and as needs arise.
School receives $8,520 music grant
Voyager Middle School’s music program was recently selected to receive $8,520 worth of new musical instruments thanks to a Michael Kamen Grant from the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation.
The grant will pay for a trumpet, two trombones, two clarinets, two flutes, a tenor saxophone and an alto saxophone.
“I’m absolutely elated,” said Michael Clark, the school’s band and orchestra director. The grant “will mean nine more students will be able to take part in our band program every year who would otherwise not be able to participate due to the expense involved with renting an instrument.”
The Everett school is part of the Mukilteo School District.
